Current Gallery: dundonald ( piece)
Dundonald is a small town located in County Down, Ireland. Now merged into the modern urban sprawl of Belfast, this tiny community was once a picturesque village in a delightful rural location. It lies in green rolling countryside - in a U-shaped glacial valley that connects Belfast with Strangford Lough, surrounded by the beautiful Castlereagh and Carrowreagh hills. The sides of the valley are riven with deep forrested rocky fissures carved out by countless waterfalls and tumbling brooks that lie hidden even to this day. These rare old photographs were taken in Dundonald in the early 1900's and reveal many of the features that made this place such a delightful haven. The long line of whitewashed cottages was called "Gape Row". Local lore suggests this was because the inhabitants of the cottages used to hang over their half-doors and "Gape" at the passers-by. An ancient Norman defensive earthworks known as a "Motte and Bailey" dominate the village - constructed during the 12th century by the conquering Normans, this stunning construction is one of the largest in Ireland and actually gives rise to the village's name. Dun (irish for fort) Donaill means Donaill's Fort - eventually corrupted to give "Dundonald" In ancient times a castle would have stood upon these ramparts, but now only the massive man-made hill and earthworks remain.
